These fees are unavoidable if you accept credit cards. These fees are known as interchange fees. Interchange fees vary by card type, business type and processing method. There are over 300 card types, all with different fees. Credit cards have higher fees than debit cards. Credit cards that offer rewards to their clients cost merchants more than standard credit cards. Whether you swipe a card, enter the credit card # into a pin pad or process cards online can all have an impact on fees charged. There is even a special rate for small ticket charges. A merchant account can fall into 1 of several billing categories; flat-rate, tiered or interchange plus. For most accounts, interchange plus will be the most cost effective option. Interchange plus is the actual fees from the credit card providers PLUS the markup or profit a merchant service provider makes on the account. The PLUS can be represented as a per transaction fee, a percentage of gross charges or both. You can find a list of interchange rates under the Interchange page of our website Tiered pricing is much more difficult to understand. The reason for that is simple, to hide fees. If you are currently being billed on tiered pricing there is a very good chance switching to interchange plus will save you money. Tiered pricing generally charges a higher rate, percentage of gross charges, per transaction fees, surcharges or any combination of those fees. These fees can be difficult to find on a statement. |
