Interchange rates are the processing fees charged by card issuers and card issuing banks. Any merchant accepting credit or debit cards has to pay these fees. They are not negotiable. Every merchant service provider must collect these fees. Interchange fees are represented as a rate % and a per transaction fee. Every rate and per transaction fee is determined by card issuer, card type, accepting business type, ticket size and processing method. You can use the chart below to determine the rate and per transaction fee for any transaction. Again, these fees are not negotiable and will be collected by your merchant service provider.
Some providers will offer straight-forward billing such as interchange plus a per transaction fee or interchange plus a percentage of gross charges fee. Other providers will do their best to convince you that you’re receiving a rate better than interchange prices. This would cost the service provider money and just does not happen. These providers generally advertise a rate lower than the standard interchange fee for standard credit cards. These providers are making their money thru surcharges, per transaction fees and increased rates on debit transactions. This type of pricing is designed to be difficult to decipher and Intersource Solutions recommends avoiding these providers. Stick with companies offering straight-forward pricing like interchange plus.
These are the most current interchange rates.
